They rolled the patients one by one onto the ambulance’s wheelchair lift, lowered, and brought into the hospital lobby. There they were stripped, sprayed with a disinfectant solution, dressed in sterile hospital gowns, positioned in disinfected wheelchairs, and placed, four at a time, in the freshly sterilized elevator car.

They wheeled Aella into the elevator first, then her friends Jane and Bronwyn, and finally Mrs. Thompson, all four smiling at nothing. The soldier guarding the elevator on the first floor radioed the guard on the sixth floor that the first of the patients were on their way up. The stainless-steel doors closed. The four catatonic patients were alone under the ghoulish glow of the elevator’s fluorescent lights.

The elevator was silent except for the faint whirring of machines high above and the chirp indicating another floor going by. There, in the relative silence, unobserved, Aella made an almost imperceptible “mmpphh,” and moved the tip of her right index finger just two millimeters up into the air before it sank back onto the fabric of the hospital gown that covered her lap... and was still again.
